The Spindleroot Hollow is a system-neutral Tavern setting designed to be dropped into your campaign at a moment’s notice, complete with characters, backstories, your choice of adventure tangents, and tavern menu!
Leaves rustle overhead as the warm breeze glides across your face. The thick woods suddenly begin to thin, and sparkling sunlight pours through the trees in golden beams. You enter a clearing that is full of life: flowers, moss-covered rocks, and vines that coil up the huge trees around you. In the middle of the clearing stands one solitary giant, a colossal tree with a trunk spanning almost ninety feet across. The gnarled giant is wrapped in rough bark, dripping with thick, soft, and glowing golden sap. You spot large double doors that fit neatly into the base of the trunk. The doors swing open with a solid, harmonic groan. The forest smells and sounds fade away, replaced by the calming scent of clean, cool air. You hear water flowing gently from a fountain just ahead of you, and the joyous singing of birds flying in and out of the entrance way. Just beyond the fountain’s sparkling mist is a wall, and faint sounds of life and laughter can be heard beyond it. A tavern is waiting, hidden safely within the trees’ sturdy walls. Welcome… to The Spindleroot Hollow.

The Spindleroot Hollow
The colossal and ancient tree that houses the tavern had originally been entrusted to a naive and gentle Nymph, whose sole duty for the last half-century was to guard the tree and provide refuge to the forest creatures as necessary. This tranquility was capriciously dismantled by Tillynut Sprigglesprout.
Tillynut challenged the impressionable Nymph to a now legendary game of chance, demanding that she offer up the deed to the great tree as collateral. Easily taken in by Tillynut’s elaborate trickery, the Nymph foolishly betrayed her sacred duty and lost the tree. Tillynut instantly took ownership, gutting the interior and transforming it into the lively and beautiful tavern it is now. The tree, though displeased, remains alive and powerful, easily containing the chaos within its walls. In a strange twist, Tillynut continues the spirit of the Nymph’s oath by providing refuge within the ancient tree, though these days, that refuge is most often sought by the thirsty and weary. Now the only constant threat to its success remains the sour pixie Zizzlebud, who carries an eternal grudge against the hollowed-out refuge.

Key Occupants
Tillynut Sprigglesprout
Tavern Owner, Fey Sprite
Middle-aged, leafy adornments around head, nude from the neck down, with wide, rounded eyes. 1ft. 1″, chubby, toddler-like build.

Finally, as your eyes reach the counter, you can see an intricately carved bar that seems expertly carved from the tree’s own wood. A leaf-green and silver-gold shimmer catches your attention as a small shape zips across the counter. The creature is tiny and unclothed, save for a delicate leafy bonnet and a scarf. It floats effortlessly towards you, with no visible wings, flittering and flipping in a display of pure joy before stopping right in front of you, its curious eyes mere inches from yours. It appears to be sniffing out your intentions, then finally, with a squeaky giggle and a voice reminiscent of tinkling bells, the creature exclaims, “Greetings, my dearest strangers! You may call me Tillynut Sprigglesprout! Come, perch a while, loosen your laces, and order something delightfully expensive!” Tillynut then flips backward in a majestic arc, dissolving behind the counter in a flourish of delight and laughter.
“Oh, you want to know about Tillynut and the Hollow? Well, as Tillynut Sprigglesprout tells it, the whole thing began with a bet…”
Tillynut, being the unrelentingly whimsical Fey Sprite that they are, challenged the Nymph (The current and sole occupant of the enormous tree) to a legendary game of chance for the deed. The stake? A ridiculous, magical ransom, a cloak woven from pure moonlight. Apparently, Tillynut convinced the Nymph that such a thing actually existed, and she giddily accepted the challenge. Tillynut won the game, of course, and gleefully took the deed from the now very bitter Nymph. The awe-inspiring location perfectly complemented the Sprite’s innate skill for hospitality and leisure, and word of the forest’s extravagant new ‘go-to’ spot immediately spread.
Naturally, that immediate success infuriated Zizzlebud, a sour pixie whose every attempt at running a tavern of their own has spectacularly failed. Zizzlebud sees Tillynut’s effortless flair and prosperity as some kind of cosmic injustice, so they’ve dedicated their miserable life to constant, petty sabotage of the Hollow. Tillynut recognizes every sticky spoon and mysterious little mishap as Zizzlebud’s work, but the Sprite holds no ill will. They simply consider the pixie’s efforts ‘tragically un-whimsical,’ and devote their attention to making sure the guests keep their bellies full and their coin pouches light.”

Ramthorn Merribough
Bartender, Male Elkfolk
Adult, caramel-colored coat, soft & rounded antlers, chocolate-brown eyes. 6ft. 3″, barrel-chested and muscled

As the gold-silver blur finally settles elsewhere, your attention finds a second figure: a large, antlered Elkfolk behind the bar. He stands calmly, radiating a sense of calm and stoicism, his gentle brown face and deep chocolate-colored eyes watching you with quiet politeness, ready to take your order.
Ramthorn Merribough was once known throughout the forest as a wild, fun-loving, and most passionate young Elkfolk, famed for his laughter and reckless good spirits. Unfortunately, one day, he made the mistake of carelessly crossing the path of a powerful Archfey who resented his natural, unbridled joy. The bitter Archfey cursed him, stealing his capacity for spontaneous emotion and passion. His quiet presence is welcome to all who grace his bartop, though a careful glance might reveal a small glimmer of joy struggling to break through the stillness in his eyes.

Snort Drudgepot
Chef, Male Pigkin
Middle-aged, bald, sporting a scruffy patch of chin hair, black eyes. 5ft. 2″, stocky build, well-fed and solid

Crossing the kitchen threshold, you are immediately assaulted by a cacophony of clatters, bangs, and sizzling grease, shattering the tavern’s calm. Cutting through the noise is the most foul, seemingly endless string of curses you’ve ever heard. Rushing around in an over-dramatic frenzy is a grumpy, visibly run-off-his-feet Pigkin. His grease-stained apron barely covers an engorged belly, and he whirls to throw a pan directly at an adolescent kitchenhand, punctuating the toss with a fresh tirade of new curses. With a violent jerk, he whips his head around, fixing you with a look of pure fury and disgust.
“What in the bloody rotten hells are you doing in my kitchen?!” he bellows, his hand already reaching for another nearby skillet. You don’t doubt for a second that the next projectile is meant for you.
Snort Drudgepot may possess truly terrible personal taste, but he is undeniably a gourmet master when forced to cook. Yet, Tillynut didn’t hire him for his recipes; rather, it was his impressive, seemingly endless ability to invent creative new curse words that brought the Sprite so much joy. Despite his grumpy demeanor and poor personal hygiene, Snort adapted to the high standards of The Spindleroot Hollow’s menu effortlessly, though not without slipping in a few of his own unfortunate homemade recipes first.

Rumors
The Bully in the Brambles.
Zizzlebud, a notorious pixie bully and longtime rival of Tillynut Sprigglesprout, just can’t seem to leave them or their beloved tavern alone. The proud (though thoroughly unsuccessful) owner of a competing establishment, Zizzlebud spends most of their time scheming against The Spindleroot Hollow. Recently, they’ve recruited a pair of fairy sisters with a knack for trouble, and together their mischief has begun to take a serious toll on Tillynut’s business. Something must be done before the situation gets out of hand.

Tinky’s Trinket Tragedy
Tinky Toodleflip, the whimsical & giggly traveling trinket salesman, has misplaced a very important family heirloom during his latest journey through the region. Upon spotting a group of adventurers or curious outsiders, it’s all but certain that Tinky will launch into a tale of woe and beg their assistance. In return, he’ll gladly offer one of his other prized trinkets, many of which possess minor magical properties and make for surprisingly useful tools on the road.

Tinky Toodleflip’s Magical Heirloom
Magic Item
A palm-sized, deep blue-colored crystal bauble, shaped like a teardrop and delicately wrapped in curling brass runes that resemble vines. Etched with tiny constellations only visible under moonlight, the bauble emits a faint, rhythmic hum when held close to the ear.
While attuned to this item, the wielder gains an unerring sense of cardinal directions, their internal compass always true, save for the most potent of magical interferences.
The Merribough Curse
If the party verbally references Ramthorn Merribough’s striking lack of emotion, Tillynut Sprigglesprout will flitter over to share the unfortunate story. The Sprite explains Ramthorn is cursed by a resentful Archfey, and only by defeating or bargaining with the Fey can he be freed. As Tillynut mentions this, Ramthorn stirs oddly, but quickly stifles what seemed to be a desperate urge to exclaim something.
Though defeating the Archfey offers no promised reward, the bitter Fey may become a troublesome recurring antagonist for the party regardless of their choice. Should the party succeed in breaking the curse, they will gain a joyful, loyal, and exceedingly helpful new lifelong companion in Ramthorn.

Gameplay Tips
Tinky’s Quest: When running Tinky’s quest, consider adding a flavorful encounter to the search for the lost heirloom. Perhaps a mischievous fey creature has claimed it and refuses to part with it without a challenge, or maybe it was carried off by giant crows, and the only way to retrieve it is through a feathery skirmish.
Zizzlebud the Bully: Being a bully and a nuisance doesn’t justify outright slaughter, especially in the whimsical (and often morally grey) world of the fey. If the party chooses a violent path, consider adding consequences. Tillynut, horrified by their brutality, may become fearful and deeply disappointed, cutting ties and refusing to offer further help or hospitality.
