“I like to give info to players at the start of a session with in-universe messages – usually by filling in a message template and DM-ing it over. It’s a bit more immersive than monologue-ing at them, and gives them something to refer back to. Plus, they read out and discuss the messages with each other so you get to find out what they think they say (and steal the idea if it’s better than yours!).

I’ve used other people’s templates before, for datapads in Star Wars or telegrams in Call of Cthulu. Now we’re playing Scum & Villainy, where NPC factions progress their agendas between sessions. As that means a lot of updates, I thought it’d be fun to make personalised tablets for my players. It was great to sift through the 2MT assets, trying to find just the right bits to match their characters!”
