“This is one of my favorite kinds of map: the kind that make me lose several days to the research-hole. I got lost in the sauce of Wikipedia and now know far more about ships than I ever really wanted to know. Luckily my group ended up having to skip a week, so I had extra time to add extra detail.

This is all meant to be a pirate king’s pleasure barge, which ended up being more of a fantasy translation of a modern cruise ship than anything historical. It even has an indoor pool and an auditorium!

The biggest challenge here was getting the shape of the ship exactly right, because I was working in Dungeondraft. Don’t get me wrong, it is an amazing program, but at my knowledge level it can be challenging to get building shapes that aren’t rectangular.

Overall, I am very proud of these maps, and my players loved exploring them almost as much as they loved fighting their way through, once the rival captain showed up.”
