Wondering how to print out our maps? Dungeon Mapper is my tool of choice. It boasts several important customization and ink-saving features. You can:

  • Print out a large map on several pieces of paper
  • Add grids to your map – square or hexagonal
  • Turn a colored battle map into a black and white map
  • Print only a selected portion of a map

Dungeon Mapper can do even more than that, but we will focus on the fundamentals in this guide! Let’s get started…

How To Print a Map

Set Up Your Map and Grid

Visit dungeonmapper.io and click the Start Printing Maps button.

The Grid options will be open by default – click the Choose Image here and select a map from your hard drive. We recommend using our “300 DPI Print Size” maps, or the largest version available in your downloads. Your selected map will load into the canvas.

Enter the map’s Grid Dimensions next, and watch as the map preview updates in the background. You can pan and zoom around this canvas with your mouse to see how it will eventually look.

Take this opportunity to adjust the grid to your liking. You can select square and hexagonal grids, adjust the color, thickness, and opacity, and even offset it if the need arises.

Optional: Make Your Map Black and White

Printing from home, or otherwise have an ink budget? This is a useful feature that allows you to print in black and white rather than full-color.

Click the Filter button on the left-hand-side navigation and click the toggle to switch from Color to Black and White. After a moment, the map preview will update and you will see your map with a black and white filter applied.

If needed, move the Black and White Range slider to adjust the value at which the filter selects black or white. Move the slider left for darker maps or right for lighter maps. The map preview will update each time you release your mouse button.

Prepare Your Pages

Click the Pages button on the left-hand-side navigation. You will see a number of page-sized overlays appear on your map preview.

Select your Paper Size in the options dialogue – “A4” is selected by default, but if you’re in the USA you are likely using “Letter” sized paper. You can select other dimensions here if you have access to a larger printer, too!

Only lower the Print Margin if you are sure that your printer can print in “borderless mode” or has another setting which allows it to print to the very edge of a page.

Prepare Your Pages

Only want to print a portion of a map?

You can click on the page previews on the canvas and manipulate them like so:

  • Press S to activate the [S]elect tool (for selecting page overlays), and M to activate the [M]ove tool (for panning around the canvas)
  • Click a page overlay to select it, and click-and-drag if you wish to move it
  • Press R to [R]otate the selected page between Portrait and Landscape mode
  • Press D to [D]elete a selected page
  • Press C to [C]reate a new page

With these tools you can include as much or as little of the map in your print as you desire. If you want to start over, press Generate Pages to generate a new batch of page overlays.

Export Your Printable PDF

When you are ready, press the Export button in the top navigation. An Export dialogue will open up with some options.

Select “PDF”, leave Compression set to “None”, and make sure Map is toggled on. Click Export and, after your file is generated, it will be downloaded to your computer.

This Export function takes all of your previous setup and creates a single PDF file. Open it up and you will find that your grid, filters, and page manipulation is all present.

You can print out this PDF at your home or office like any other document, or you can take it to a professional print store. All that’s left is to print it out, cut away the margins, and arrange your pages into a single battle map!
