Guards & Soldiers – Premade NPCs - Banner - Large

Every city needs guards, and every campaign goes through them like tissues in spring. This article gives you a large batch of guards with personalities, quirks, and tokens to pick from!

Soldiers and guards are two of the NPC types adventurers are most likely to encounter. After all, what adventurer hasn’t trespassed or otherwise violated the law?

Narratively, guards serve a number of purposes. They can be an obstacle, badgering the party about contraband goods or local regulations. They can be a threat, chasing the party down after they commit a crime or disrespect a noble. They can also be a source of information when the party needs to know more about the local area or when they’re hunting down a bounty themselves.

The “guards” of a farming village and the guards of a major capital are very different, of course, and the guards of a dwarven settlement may differ wildly from those of an elven canopy-town. In this article, I will present several different guard organizations, with example guards and leaders for each.

The Drolsbek City Guard

The Drolsbek City Guard is a well-organized law enforcement group. They wear chainmail with the guards’ crest on the pauldrons. Their equipment is impressive-looking but old, a remnant of more prosperous times. Corruption is common, from guards who will look the other way for a few silver, to ward sergeants who will torch buildings for the right price.

Enni Helmann, human guard captain

Overworked, stretched thin. She keeps a map of the city and surrounding area on a table in her office, covered in painted wooden blocks representing the locations and suspected locations of bandit camps, enemy forces, friendly forces, and so on and so forth. Her voice is high but authoritative.

Timo Heitmeyer, human guard.

Timo is an old man with gray hair and an oddly melodic cadence. He’s not much of a fighter, but he knows just what to say to coerce the truth out of people. He has over a dozen grandchildren, and he has lost count of exactly how many there are. Timo has breathing issues and can’t run for more than 30 seconds before he starts wheezing.

Arno Walther, corrupt human guard

Arno is a black-haired man with pale skin and a moustache. He has a daughter named Sophie, who is perpetually ill, and he sometimes takes bribes to pay for her medical care.

Patrique Eichmann, human guard.

Patrique is a young and over-eager guard who has a bad habit of chasing suspects with no regard for his own safety. He runs very quickly and carries a short sword. He can raise his voice quite loudly, but the effects of his shouts of “HALT!” are diminished somewhat by how often his voice cracks.

Jennifer Pitchler, human guard

Jennifer Pitchler is the unloved fifth daughter of House Pitchler, forced to join the Guard to bring in some money for the family coffers. She resents her coworkers, but absolutely loathes the criminals they have to deal with.

Brent Horburg, human guard

Brent is a bearded, brown-haired man who speaks with an odd cadence. He stresses the last word of the sentence, regardless of how much sense it makes. He is a proficient axe-thrower, and he often keeps a hand-axe on his belt, just in case.

Jasper Lyndow, half-elf guard

Jasper is a chubby half-elf with blond hair and sky-blue eyes. He wears a pair of elven leather bracers, embossed with the image of a five-petalled flower. He is a regular at a seedy tavern called The Ash Crown, where he can often be found playing dice games.

Barret Hewn, half-dwarf guard

Barret is a short man with braided black hair and a permanent five-o’clock shadow. His voice is deep and booming, as is his laughter. He often whittles small figurines while on guard duty.

Magdelen “Mag” Bendell, human dogmaster

Mag is a short woman with black hair and a large nose. Her arms are covered with tattoos with religious scriptures about justice. Her voice is high and seems to cut through any noise. She patrols with her dog, Fel, who is trained to sniff out bat guano and other dangerous spell components.

Raphael “Raph” Gavreau, half-orc guard

Raphael is a broad-shouldered man with dark green skin and black hair. He’s kind-hearted but not particularly bright. He carries a halberd, which gives him terrifying reach in addition to his natural strength.

Dylan Marks, human guard

Dylan is a brown-haired man with green eyes. He wears a chainmail hauberk with a tabard over top of it. He patrols on foot, but he is not very perceptive, and so he is not very effective. If he does spot trouble, however, he has a short sword and a mean left hook.

Milo Horne, human guard

Milo is a one-eyed man with pale skin and red hair. He smokes tobacco from a pipe while on guard duty, no matter how often people tell him to stop. His voice is raspy. He carries a mancatcher, allowing him to restrain criminals at a distance.

Jimmy, human guard

Jimmy is a short trans man with black hair and soft features. He fights with a hand-axe and a metal shield with a portrait of a minor justice deity painted on it. In his downtime, he can usually be found climbing something or working on his agility.

Yuriel Price, human guard

Yuriel is a tall, broad-shouldered woman with long, white hair. Her voice is husky and she carries a heavy two-handed sword, perfect for ensuring that criminals will not commit further crimes, or breaking through doors. A vein in her neck throbs visibly when she’s annoyed.

Hjar Lastale, dwarf guard

Hjar is a brown-haired dwarf who speaks with a thick Scottish accent. He wears a medallion depicting the dwarven god of the forge at all times. Hjar can regularly be found at the Ashen Crown, playing dice games and drinking until closing. He carries a warhammer while on patrol.

Telmin Keengrip, dwarf guard

Telmin is a dwarven man with blonde hair and a braided beard. He made most of his own armor with his own two hands, and is proud to guard the city of Drolsbek. He carries a battle axe with an angular blade. He carries a pouch of dwarven dice on him at all times, just in case a good opportunity for dice games comes up.

Ester’s Vale Citizen Guard

The town guard of Ester’s Vale is an informal organization, consisting of any adult who can lift a sledgehammer, sword, or shovel. They are intensely suspicious of outsiders and, while they won’t immediately accuse them of a crime without evidence, they are unlikely to take an outsider’s word over a local’s.

Zadock Wallace, human captain

Wallace is an old man with gray hair. He is not much of a fighter, but he has an uncanny sense for where a miscreant will run or hide. He is slightly more tolerant of “adventurers” than his underlings, but he would prefer that they move out of his town as quickly as possible.

Barnabas Kinniard, blacksmith

Barnabas is a wild-eyed ferrier with black hair and grass-green eyes. He keeps a sledgehammer by the front door to his forge, just in case somebody starts causing trouble. He speaks with a deep, gravelly voice, the result of years of breathing in hot air and coal smoke.

Tabitha Poole, perfumer

Tabitha is a blonde woman who spends her days grinding flowers and soaking them in chemicals to make renowned perfumes. She is also an excellent shot with a bow, which makes her a valuable member of the town guard. Her voice is high, but she knows how to put just the right amount of cold contempt into it to scare ne’er-do-wells.

Jago Clemmo, human farmer

Jago is a tall, broad-shouldered man with short, blonde hair. He doesn’t talk much, but he’s strong as an ox, and he can tell how fertile the dirt is just by smelling it. He carries a pitchfork when it’s his turn to go on guard patrols.

Aphra Hershey, human miller

Aphra is a woman in her late 40s. She owns the local mill and does most of the maintenance on it herself. She uses a large wrench for both repairs and guard duties. Her husband is exempted from guard duties due to being unable to walk.

Joan Hershey, human guard

Joan is an 18-year-old woman who has just started serving her time as a guard. She is nervous and prone to screaming. She carries a club, just in case something happens. She is surprisingly strong when she needs to be.

The McKinley Mine

The McKinley Mine is an iron mining operation in the mountains. Isolated from the rest of society, the workers’ camp is under the full control of Ilya McKinley and her hired goons. The guards below work well for any private enterprise, be it a different mine, a logging camp, or an isolated alchemical processing facility.

Ilya McKinley, human mine boss

Ilya is a tall, brown-haired woman with a stern look in her eyes and ice in her heart. She owns the mine, and has invested a lot of money in it. If she has to work the employees to death to get her return, so be it.

Bryce Coleson, human thug

Bryce is a tall man with a nice hat. He used to beat people up for free, now he does it for a paycheck. He carries a pickaxe haft, which he uses as a club if anyone gets out of line.

Cezar Zuba, human guard

Cezar is a broad-shouldered, squat man with black hair and a sharp blade. He signed up with the McKinley Mine because it seemed like an easy way to make some silver, but the brutality of the other guards and McKinley herself has really started to unnerve him.

Celina Bideron, human guard

Celina is a stocky woman with blonde hair and a deep, brassy voice. She keeps a whip at her belt, since its loud crack stops almost anyone in their tracks. Most of her paycheck goes to supporting her sister and niece, so she “confiscates” money from the miners whenever she can find a flimsy pretext.

Nik Manas, half-elf guard

Nik is a green-eyed, balding half-elf. Several of his teeth are visibly rotting, and his breath is awful. He carries a heavy chain, which he uses to enforce the mine boss’ will.

Markos Stanislov, human guard

Markos is a bald, human man who is so thin he is practically skeletal. He has unusually large and prominent canines on both his upper and lower jaws. He used to be a miner, but Ilya decided that his unsettling visage made him more effective as a guard. He carries a hammer for his “work.”

Mounted Guards

These guards patrol the trade routes of their kingdoms, searching for people in trouble, defending rich people’s cargo, and hunting down criminals.

Regis Kaine, half-elf rider

Regis is a man with patchy stubble and pointy ears. His hair is red, and he carries a bow slung across his back. He rides a black stallion with a shock of white in its mane. Regis is a talented rider, but not a very competent speaker. The horse is named Ivo.

Joseph Meer, human rider

Joseph is a black-haired man with blue eyes and tan skin. He used to be a farmer until a bad drought put his family deep into debt, which resulted in the local lord taking their land. Now, he rides a red mare called Chase, searching the roads and trails for bandits, enemy soldiers, and people in need.

Mira Malzis, human rider

Mira is a red-haired woman with brown eyes and a wicked smile. Her lower left leg has been amputated, just below the knee, and she wears a prosthetic with a boot nailed on to it.. She wears a dark green cloak, which flutters behind her as she rides. Her horse is a black stallion named Bolt, and he has white “socks” of fur around his feet.

Tar’salor Willowspirit, elf rider

Tar’salor is a black-haired elf with pale skin and green eyes. He wears armor made of resin-impregnated wood. He speaks Common with a lilting cadence and ends most of his sentences with “yes?,” a habit carried over from Elven grammar. He rides a white-maned mare named Butterfly.

Do’ren Flowerfall, elf rider

Do’ren is a tan-skinned elven woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. She wears a light cloak made of large leaves. Her primary armament is an elven longbow, and she keeps several types of arrows in a quiver on her back. Her mount is a black and green axe beak named Dreyfus.

Jedonov, halfling rider

Jedonov is a halfling with gray hair and blue eyes. He is old and speaks slowly, but his eyesight is just as sharp as his instincts. He spends his downtime practising divination with a deck of cards, which he claims helps him track down criminals. He rides a brown-haired goat named Goat.

Rassa Silvertank, dwarf rider.

Rassa is a guard from one of the dwarves’ desert fortresses. She has coppery hair and light green eyes. She rides a camel and carries a pike for stabbing at invaders and criminals, usually the local kobold population. Her voice is gravelly, but she projects it surprisingly well.

Zenovia Perra, human rider

Zenovia is a stout woman with short, black hair. She carries a curved sword with a square guard. She was raised in a family of merchants, and her family was killed by bandits in a highway robbery. When she closes her eyes at night, she still sees the face of the bandit leader. Her horse is named Boulevard.

Afterword

I hope you’ve enjoyed these many, many guards! I hope they liven up your sessions and that your players enjoy roleplaying with/against them!
