Stellar Crew – Premade Sci-Fi NPCs - Banner - Large

Got a starship you need to stock with crew? This article contains two dozen crew in several different roles to fill out your ensemble cast!

“The foreman carpenter allocates his men’s work according to their ability. […] The foreman should take into account the abilities and limitations of his men, circulating among them and asking nothing unreasonable. He should know their morale and spirit, and encourage them when necessary. This is the same as the principle of strategy.”

-Miyamoto Musashi, The Book of Five Rings, written in Kan’ei 20.

So you’ve got a starship. Maybe you’re a small crew of freelance cargo-runners, maybe you’re a squadron of hotshot pilots with a fighter carrier, maybe you’re the command staff of a research and first contact vessel on a half-decade mission in uncharted space. No matter what your deal is, you’re going to need more than just the party to crew your ship, and this is article is meant to give you some a nice list of personnel to hire on, or drag out of the bunks as they’re needed.

These crew are mainly meant for a larger vessel, but many of them should fit well on a ship closer in scale to Serenity or the Millennium Falcon as well. The home worlds of the Nayn and Wokro are described in The Western Sectors. A few other species are referenced in the following sections of this article, but no background knowledge is needed for them, or the Nayn and Wokro, for that matter.

I have refrained from giving any of these NPCs ranks, both because I suspect most people will use them for campaigns that are more Firefly than Star Trek, and because figuring out the military ranks of a space fleet in an unspecified future time period and an ambiguous setting is a little beyond the scope of this article.

Pilots

A talented pilot can be a blessing or a curse. They can make your ship dance through the sky, and they can make your engineering section scream about man-hours and spare parts. For the sake of simplicity, I’ve opted to go with “pilot” over “helmsman,” even if the pilot in question is most familiar with capital ships. That seems to be the more common nomenclature, despite the significant naval influence in most sci-fi settings. Either way, they fly the ship.

Jaggoda “Jag” Starzek, human pilot

Jag is a tall, slim woman with short, blue hair. She used to work as a jet-bike courier in a crowded metropolis, and applies that same style of daredevil piloting to any ship she takes control of. She keeps her old jet-bike helmet on the floor beside her whenever she’s at the controls as a good luck charm.

Jubykey, stirreon pilot

Jubykey is a white-feathered chicken-like stirreon who often squawks while talking. He claims that his piloting skills stem from his avian ancestry, and he routinely mumbles prayers to the ancestors while performing maneuvers. This is incredibly disconcerting to most other crewmembers.

Sh’krit, insectoid pilot

Sh’krit is an insectoid with yellow compound eyes and a purple exoskeleton. She is cool under pressure and speaks with clicks and chitters that her crewmates all seem to understand. Recently, she has also added the human gesture known as the “thumbs up” to her repertoire. She only has two fingers per hand, but the smaller hands at the ends of her secondary arms make up for that when it comes to manipulating controls.

Tuuria Karambruun, nayn pilot

Karambruun (car-ahm-broon) is a wiry gray-skinned humanoid with black hair and sunken eyes. She was trained to fly on the heavy, armored hulks of the Nayn Fleet, which makes her a good fit for manning the helm on large ships of a more advanced fleet. She wears a gold-plated gorget around her neck with text in the Nayn script that translates to “ATTACKER.” This is the Nayn version of a combat medal.

Communications Officers

The duties of Comms varies by ship type. From hailing unidentified ships to traffic control to passing orders, the Communications Officer is the ship’s main point of diplomatic contact with the outside world.

Rohit Lata, human communications officer

Rohit is a tall man with short black hair and tan skin. His voice is soft but clear, enunciating every word clearly whenever he’s on his station. He is also a trained combat medic, which makes him an excellent fit for any vessel likely to respond to emergencies. Every morning, he runs a couple of laps around the ship to keep himself in shape.

Felgr, octopoid communications officer

Felgr is a blue alien with eight tentacles. These are attached to the bottom of his lightbulb-like head, which has a row of three narrow slits for his eyes and mouth. In his downtime, he practices octopoid martial arts, putting all eight limbs to deadly use.

Svartr, neocorvid communications officer

Svartr is a four-foot-tall bird with black iridescent feathers, descended from genetically altered old-Earth ravens. Her wings end in rudimentary hands hidden in the feathers, allowing her to hold things and hit buttons. She wears a green gemstone pendant around her neck. She takes any opportunity she can to go down to a planet’s surface and get some flying time in.

Rokar Azallarh, iceworlder communications officer

Rokar is a blue-skinned woman born on a frozen world. Her hair is naturally white, though she does experiment with dying it bright colors occasionally. Her voice is deep and rich, tinged with a vaguely Nordic accent. She keeps a cloth banner depicting her clan’s symbol in her quarters.

Engineers

Your ship is going to get damaged. That’s just a fact. Your engineers and mechanics will help keep your ship flying until the next port of call, through sheer grit and duct tape if necessary. If you’re really lucky, they’ll also reverse the polarity on something for you.

Matty Shoals, human mechanic

Matty is a brown-haired human man who was, by his own telling, born beside a crate of jump drive parts. He grew up on a family-owned cargo hauler, but recently struck out on his own to learn about the wider galaxy. He’s still learning to talk to people outside his family, and there’s a distinct drawl in his speech.

Newton, stirreon mechanic

Newton is a white-feathered stirreon with green eyes. He learned his skills on a frontier world, building dirt bikes out of parts that the mining corps and agrifarms had thrown away. His repairs won’t pass inspection, but they’ll hold until the next spaceport, and if they don’t, a big glob of resin will probably do the job. He has an intense fear of drowning, which is part of the reason he works on spaceships.

Emily “Em” Shawtree, human engineer

Em is a black-haired human woman with dark skin. She is built like a quarterback, and is nearly as muscular. When she was younger, she worked on the pit crew for a jet racer, and she brings the intense practice drills and advanced coordination to every ship she works on. Her voice is deep and clear.

Caryon Ma’rab, wokro engineer

Engineer Ma’rab is a tall, wokro woman with light purple skin and blue eyes. She is a proud woman with a deep knowledge of spacecraft design principles, thanks to her training in the Royal Wokrona Spaceforce. Ma’rab is deaf and communicates primarily via sign language. She is a proficient scuba diver.

Scientists

The captain and his three to five most trusted crew don’t know everything, and that’s where scientists come in. From space lightning to spontaneous salamanderization, your ship’s scientist is the go-to source for explanations. Or, failing that, a shocked “But this is impossible!”

Weg Tril, stirreon geologist

Weg is a short, gray-feathered stirreon who wears a pair of goggles with a set of magnifying lenses that can be swivelled into place to allow for intense examination of rocks. He works as a freelance prospector, helping companies find oil, minerals, or whatever else they need on planetoids and asteroids. He eats incredibly noisily.

Kwoz, lizardman physicist

Kwoz is a tall, yellow-scaled, lizard-like alien with red eyes. He wears a small device around his neck that translates his native language into Galactic Standard, since his vocal cords physically cannot produce most of Galactic Standard’s phonemes. His research field of choice is jumpdrive technology, and he is always searching for a crew willing to let him tinker with their drives. He spends most of his downtime working out, and this and his research are the only two things he is capable of holding a conversation about.

James “Jim” Hardcastle, human geneticist

Dr. Hardcastle is a short man with black hair and an extra finger on each hand. He has dedicated his life to studying DNA, the building blocks of most known life, and manipulating it to enhance or create creatures suited to specific environments. In his spare time, he builds models of historical naval vessels.

Bo’ay Thuss, greenian linguist

Bo’ay is a green-skinned humanoid from a species notorious for their piratical activities. He took a different path, leaving the pirate clans and studying various alien languages at a prestigious university. He regularly “jokes” about how his linguistic knowledge will make it easier to threaten and extort ships when he returns to the pilot clans. He enjoys playing card games.

Medics

Whether they’re patching up gunshot wounds on the table of a space diner or diagnosing a mysterious ailment spreading through the crew, a good medic is vital to any crew of spacers.

Dr. Nomolun Bor, human medical officer

Dr. Bor is a tall woman with a black ponytail. She spent years in medical school learning to be a plastic surgeon, but switched to trauma medicine after she was caught up in the Martian Megaquake Disaster. She practices calligraphy in her spare time, and claims that it helps with her dexterity.

Dr. Shriv Zahalar, iceworlder parasitologist

Dr. Zahalar is a short, blue-skinned man with close-cropped white hair and stubble. He was infected by a parasite on a frontier world in his youth, and since then has been absolutely fascinated by the creatures, especially the ones that form a symbiotic relationship with their host. He’s not actually sure where his quarters are, so he sleeps on a cot in his office. The walls of the office are lined with preserved parasite specimens.

Camilla Ryo, human medical cadet

Ryo is a short, stocky woman with black hair and brown eyes. She was initially trained as a commanding officer, but switched to the medical track after a disastrous encounter with some hostile boarders. Once she finishes her training, this combination of skills will make her an excellent asset. In her spare time, she enjoys fencing, and is always eager to learn other armed combat styles.

The Mediconsole, machine

A cut-rate option for cash-strapped crews, the Mediconsole is a vending machine-like object that allows users to input their symptoms, then instructs them to jam their arm into a hole, and injects them with something that might help. Cough? Injection. Hormone replacement therapy? Injection. Gunshot? You got it, that’s an injection, too! Particularly cash-strapped crews can opt for an ad-subsidized model of the Mediconsole, lowering operating costs in exchange for having to watch a 15-second ad before any treatment.

Other Crew

Need to fill out the ranks with some specialist positions? Here you go. This section is for the folks you’re probably not talking to every session, but who make a nice addition to a scene, or a good contact for the party.

Eyan Irriberi, wokro astrogator

Eyan is a short, wokro woman who was born without a left eye. The socket is fully covered with skin. This doesn’t make her a better astrogator; it just means that her depth perception is not very good. She collects gemstones and wears a necklace with a purple crystal from her home planet, Wokrona, in its pendant.

Mella V’toog, wokro hacker

Mella is a chubby, wokro woman with long fingers and a perpetual smirk. She has a natural proficiency for programming and uses it, primarily, to spoof credchit signatures. She always sleeps in her emergency evacuation suit. She rarely leaves her quarters, preferring to use ship communications systems to talk to people. She sometimes keys up her comm even while the person she’s talking to is in the same room.

Yannig Neeko, nayn gunner

Six feet of gray skin, muscle, and fangs, Yannig is a gunner who was trained by the Nayn military. His training makes him very good with kinetic weapons, but he hasn’t quite got a handle on pulse lasers or other energy weapons yet. He’s wanted for desertion by the Nayn military, a fact that he tries to keep to himself.

Kyle “Grease” Kazuki, human weapons officer

Kazuki is a tall man with light skin and black hair. His left arm is a bulky gray temporary cybernetic, the kind that typically serves as a stop-gap while a bespoke replacement is built. He has modified his extensively for his particular use-cases, though it does retain the ugly, angular appearance typical of such devices. He is always tinkering with the weapon systems of his ship, trying to juice another kiloton or two out of the missiles, or another keV out of the masers. He builds miniature models of historical firearms for fun.

Afterword

You could make a reasonable argument for “astronavigator” being the correct term over “astrogator,” since the “navi-” portion comes from the Latin word for ship and not water or ocean, but I think “astrogator” sounds cleaner. This opinion may be influenced by how many Honor Harrington books I’ve listened to, and how many times I’ve heard her call for course solutions from “astro.” I will not hold it against you if you disagree with me on this one.
